Chaos a definition:
1. a state of utter confusion or disorder; a total lack of organization or order.
2. the infinity of space or formless matter supposed to have preceded the existence of the ordered universe.
3. a pattern or state of order existing within apparent disorder, as in the irregularities of a coastline or a snowflake
Chaos Quotes:
Chaos often breeds life, when order breeds habit. -Adams, Henry Brooks
She was one of those born to make chaos cosmic. -Beerbohm, Sir (Henry) Max(imilian)
I feel that art has something to do with the achievement of stillness in the midst of chaos. -Bellow, Saul
Chaos is inherent in all compounded things. Strive on with diligence. - Buddha
In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you. - Deepak Chopra
Chaos is a friend of mine. - Bob Dylan
Now that we know what Chaos is ( or do we?) let's talk about chaos in our lives. If you are like most of us, when your life is in a state of chaos you feel out of control and insecure and you strive to set your life in order again. Sometimes this can (and usually does) result in you feeling even more stressed than before as it can be very tiring keeping all those things under control.
We humans have many ways of creating order in our lives, we: label things, describe things, explain things, create systems, join societies, religions and groups, and generally resist any chaos in general. Why?
If Chaos is the original state of the universe and we were born out of chaos why do we resist it?
"You need chaos in your soul to give birth to a dancing star." - Neitsche
“Chaos in the world brings uneasiness, but it also allows the opportunity for creativity and growth.” - Tom Barrett
What if all this stiving after order was unnatural? Could you give up your addiction to control and let go enough to embrace chaos rather than resist it? Remember what we resist persists!
"In trying to order chaos through explanation. This resists chaos and keeps us stick in chaos: "..possibly chaos is actually the natural order and in that chaos there might be islands of order. But chaos is the order. David Peat (exerpt from The Tao of Chaos by Stephen Wolinsky)
What if the very thing we are resisting has an untapped beauty and order that when explored can be rediscovered as an energy flow that brings us a deeper connection to ourselves as the universe?
Chaos when thought of in its orginal meaning as 'the void' or the 'formless matter' out of which the whole universe was created or born, is in actuality a state of pure potential.
Indeed David Bohm (physicist, scientist and forward thinker) proved that within chaos is order both explicit (easily seen, outer) and implicit (hidden, inner). In describing the implicate order within Chaos he said,
"This order is not to be understood solely in terms of a regular arrangement of objects (e.g., in rows) or as a regular arrangement of events (e.g. in a series). Rather, a total order is contained in some implicit sense, in each region of space and time. Now the word 'implicit' is based on the verb 'to implicate'. This means 'to fold inward' (as multiplication means 'folding many times'). So we may be led to explore the notion that in some sense each region contains a total structure 'enfolded' within it."
This enfoldment of order into chaos is easily seen as a way to step into the flow of what chaos is in our lives, step into that flow and allow ourselves to be taken on a journey of awakening and expansion into a new more dynamic world.
Bohm believed all matter is unfolded out of what he eventually described as a holomovement, which meant that matter could also enfold and so return into the holomovement. Bohm considered quantum mechanics to be a process of unfolding and enfolding. He imagined the universe as an infinite sea of space and energy out of which matter could be unfolded, which he called explicating, and enfolded which he called implicating, which, in Bohm’s words, “together are a flowing, undivided wholeness. Every part of the universe is related to every other part but in different degrees.” In an interview published in Omni magazine conducted by the physicist F. David Peat and John Briggs, Bohm explained his concept of enfoldment:
“Everybody has seen an image of enfoldment: You fold up a sheet of paper, turn it into a small packet, make cuts in it, and then unfold it into a pattern. The parts that were close in the cuts unfold to be far away. This is like what happens in a hologram. Enfoldment is really very common in our experience. All the light in this room comes in so that the entire room is in effect folded into each part. If your eye looks, the light will be then unfolded by your eye and brain. As you look through a telescope or a camera, the whole universe of space and time is enfolded into each part, and that is unfolded to the eye. With an old-fashioned television set that's not adjusted properly, the image enfolds into the screen and then can be unfolded by adjustment.”
The process of unfolding and enfolding suggests a whole exists primarily as a base, and although Bohm described the whole as being dynamic and in constant motion in most of his writings, in his later years he began to describe time as occurring within timelessness.
As we allow ourselves to enfold into a new pattern we will eventually unfold and our lives will be different, enriched and a step will have been taken without the need for the pain that resisting brings.
Perhaps by allowing the state of chaos in our lives to expand our view of the universe we too will become expansive and able to create more, allow more and percieve more of everything in our lives. In doing so a new order will be revealed, one more suited to the potential of the lives we were meant to live and to who we really are.
When living from chaos we become aware of this expanded awareness the ability to percieve more options make different decisions instead of creating from habit that which we are comfortable with, we are able to create from a new expansive and enriched perspective. You know Einstein said that the true definition of insanity was doing the same things over and over and expecting a different result.
Have you ever thought about it? When you make decisions from the same perspective from which you created your life until now, you are on a treadmill and will continue to create the same things over and over again. True, you may not like what you get, you may even actively dislike it, but you re-create it over and over because you are comfortable with that discomfort. It feels like home and feels safe.
Just like a rat trained to run the maze the same way over and over in order to find it's food, you are running on the same scripts and making the same decisions about life from your narrow, controlled perception. Expand! Allow chaos to show you the magic of seeing and experiencing more of life - "life is a grand adventure or it is nothing at all." - Helen Keller
Within you is a 'dancing star' waiting to be born and it can only do so in the same way that all stars are born - out of chaos. Expand and allow chaos to show you the magic of you, all you can be and all your life can be.. Through the magic of chaos (the only true magic) you will find all your answers - yes all of them. How to heal, how to create more of what you really want and how to live your life fulfilled!

Easy Exercise in Expanded Awareness:
1. Sit comfortably with your eyes open and find one thing/one spot to look at
2. allow your eyes to focus on that one thing
3. now let your focus soften while still gazing at that one spot
4. allow your perception to shift while keeping your eyes in the one spot
5. What more can you see? What more can you hear? What more can you feel?
6. allow your awareness to continue to expand - keep asking yourself the questions in step 5 over and over each time you become aware of something new (see, hear or feel) ask the questions again.
7. Practice keeping this expanded awareness on a daily basis and practice this everyday until it becomes automatic
You will be amazing at the difference living from an expanded awareness brings to your life!
